Style Guide: Open Shelf Kitchen

I have always loved the open shelf look in kitchens and feel as though they instantly open up and brighten any space. As much as I love the open look, I was also a little hesitant adding open shelving to my own kitchen, as styling and organizing open shelving can be a daunting task. You want the shelves to be thoughtfully curated but not cluttered. Below I am sharing a few tips for open shelf styling.

1. Function vs. Style— Find pieces that serve a purpose. A great way to add both style and function to a shelf is by choosing a beautiful dining set. The right set will accent the space while adding shape, texture and dimension to the shelves. We love how the Studio Grey collection from Denby Pottery adds to our space aesthetically with its beautiful urban meets artisan grey color palette while also providing function.

2. Consider height and dimension. Keep in mind the height of your shelves as well as the height of the pieces you are placing on each shelf. Items that serve a purpose and are frequently used are best placed within reach and on lower shelves while more decorative and less frequently used items are great for upper shelves that may require a step stool to reach. Also consider the size and dimension of each item. You want each item to draw the eye and lead to the next as if telling a story. Your eye should not be locked on one singular item but should move around the room.

3. Add some greenery! It is no secret that plants, real or faux, can bring a little life to any space and the kitchen is no exception. Some things to consider when choosing your greenery— Live plants require some tending so it’s important to do a little research to find ones that will thrive in your space. Lighting and humidity will play a big role in this department. Faux plants are great for those who don’t have a green thumb as well as those who like to change up decor seasonally.

4. Don’t be afraid of changing things up. Just because you style the shelves one way doesn’t mean they always have to be styled in that way. Whether you don’t think the kitchen flows or you like to change things up seasonally, DO YOU! There is no right or wrong way to style your kitchen.

Hopefully you found these few tips to be helpful! Have some tips of your own? Feel free to share them below!
