One Room Challenge Week 2: Demo Day

It's week 2 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge ! This week was all about demo, planning and oh so much drywall dust.

There wasn’t too much demo to do in this space before we could get started on putting it all back together. First things first, we moved everything out of the space, and made our to-do list. Since supply runs would be limited this go around I wanted to make sure we had a solid plan that wouldn’t leave too much wait time between steps.

First up on the list was removing the old drop ceiling. I have been dying to remove these faux wood paneled tiles since we moved in nearly 3 years ago. The original plan was to remove the tiles, raise the ceiling back up and install drywall. Unfortunately, as most renovation projects go, we had to improvise a little when we found fiberboard beneath the tiles. Above the fiberboard was decades old loose blown-in insulation. This was NOT a mess we wanted to get into with this project and opted to cover the fiberboard with drywall instead of removing it and having to re-insulate. The process would still gain us 2” of ceiling height and the desired solid/smooth surface.

Once we made a decision on the ceiling we took out the contractor grade box light and updated a few of the outlets/switches in the room before installing the drywall. After finding more fiberboard behind the paneling we decided to keep it on the walls which will save us some time and money and instead of adding more drywall. This decision also meant we would be trimming out the entire space to cover the transitions from drywall to paneling.

Installing drywall on the ceiling was not the easiest and holy cow the level of dust that came down when it was time to mud and sand was no joke, but the addition of drywall and the extra 2” of ceiling height have already brightened the space and made it feel so much more open.

I am excited to see what some fresh paint and new trim will do for the space in the coming weeks.

Look out next week when I will be sharing the design plan and as always, don't forget to follow along each week to see the progress of each of the Featured Designers and Guest Participants
